Summary:
Harm Reduction can be considered a movement for social justice built on a belief in, and respect for, the rights of people who choose to use and may become diagnosed with an Addictive Disorder. The principles of motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care, and chronic disease management implement strategies to ‘meet people where they are at’ in their readiness to make changes to their gambling behaviors. Using a harm reduction approach is particularly indicated for people in precontemplation or contemplation stages who are ambivalent about abstinence.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify the harm related to gambling to develop strategies to increase safety and decrease risk.
- Discover ways harm reduction techniques can help move persons toward change.
- Discuss a mock case with one of the Center’s Peers and learn ways to keep the conversation going with the persons you serve.
