Summary:
This webinar explores the “hidden” connection between gambling and mental health, highlighting how gambling disorder—now recognized as a behavioral addiction in the DSM-5-TR—frequently co-occurs with depression, anxiety, and substance use. Participants will examine the impact of increased accessibility through mobile sports betting and online platforms, which can exacerbate existing psychological vulnerabilities. The webinar provides a roadmap for recognizing early warning signs, understanding the role of shame and stigma, and identifying evidence-based screening and support strategies for individuals and their families.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify the relationship between gambling and co-occurring mental health conditions: Participants will learn to recognize the impact of gambling among individuals diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses, such as mood and anxiety disorders.
  2. Recognize warning signs and behavioral indicators of gambling harm: Attendees will be equipped to identify clinical warning signs, including the psychological effects of “chasing losses” and the role of deception in maintaining gambling behaviors.
  3. Implement practical screening and support strategies: Participants will gain familiarity with validated screening tools, such as the Brief Biosocial Gambling Screen (BBGS), and learn how to initiate sensitive conversations about gambling harm with clients or loved ones.
