Summary:
Gambling addiction rates have skyrocketed since the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports betting in 2018. While gambling is traditionally seen as an adult activity, younger audiences are now engrossed by easy to access digital gambling and gambling related games. Youth gambling is more than a distraction- it is a serious health risk with financial, emotional, legal, and relational consequences. In attending this presentation, attendees will not only learn of the various ways that gambling can harm young people and their friends and families but will acquire practical strategies for educating youth on the topic and safeguarding them from gambling harm.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will understand how gambling affects diverse populations of young people, including disparities in risk and harm.
- Attendees will develop a respect for the scope of a youth gambling problem, recognizing consequences beyond financial loss.
- Attendees will acquire strategies to safeguard youth from gambling harm (ex: doing away with high school casino night, clearly presenting the risks and possible consequences of participation in fantasy sports, March Madness, etc)
