Summary:
Gambling Disorder may be referred to as a Hidden Addiction as it the only behavioral addiction classified as a Substance Related and Addictive Disorder within the DSM-5. With the expansion and access to legal forms of gambling, the risk of harm expands as well. Responsible gambling means people will consider the risks involved, yet there are individuals who are unable to mitigate the harms associated with gambling. These dangers can go undetected if we are not integrating a conversation about gambling into our supportive work with others. Gambling harms may include bankruptcy, divorce, loss of friendships, housing insecurity, and unemployment. This training hopes to inspire healthcare professionals to implement an evidence-based gambling screening tool into their regular practice and start to have a conversation with those in their community.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of Gambling Disorder, using the DSM-5 to formalize a diagnosis of the Substance-Related and Addictive Disorder.
- Utilize evidenced based gambling screening tools, with tips to incorporate gambling related questions into a biopsychosocial assessment and a part of regular clinical practice
- Discuss options for reducing harm, treatment interventions and resources for recovery.
