The Hilton Baltimore was the site of the 29th National Conference on Problem Gambling, held July 8-11, 2015. New conference records were set with over 600 attendees, approximately 100 presenters, and 45 sponsors. The Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling (the Center) and the Maryland Council on Problem Gambling were co-hosts of the event.
The National Conference recognizes several awards during the conference. The Center was selected for two of these awards, both won in collaboration with the University of Maryland School of Medicine MedSchool Maryland Productions under the direction of Susan Hadary: Best Website award – aboveallodds.org; and Best Public Awareness Campaign Award – baltimoregambler.org.
The conference offered many wonderful networking opportunities. Attendees kicked off the Main Conference (July 10-11) at the Welcome Reception, enjoyed incredible artwork and food on Friday evening at the American Visionary Art Museum, woke up bright and early to run/stroll around the Orioles and Ravens stadiums in honor of those in recovery, and it all ended with a friendly game of baseball between two local rivals, the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals.
The Center sponsored over 80 scholarships to mental health and behavioral health professionals within the state of Maryland to attend the conference.
Many friendships were made, invaluable information was shared, and people from many different pieces of the Problem Gambling field came together as one community fighting for a common cause.
